MAET Showcase

Introduction

Welcome to my Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) showcase! Below you will find projects and artifacts I have created during my time at Michigan State University. At MSU I focused on how to become a leader, fine tuned my teaching philosophy, designed lesson plans relevant to the 21st century learner, and created various research projects in the field of education. You can see each of the full projects by clicking on their thumbnail images.

Leadership and Professional Development

FAIR USE FOR EDUCATION

The internet is an ever growing library of information and media, but what can educators legally use without obtaining permissions from the original author? In this video I explain Fair Use for educators and clear up any misconceptions regarding copyright laws. This video demonstrates my ability to create a high quality presentation that can be used as a professional development for my colleagues.

TECH TOOLS FOR EMERGENT BILINGUAL STUDENTS

This is a video about using technology to better meet the needs of emergent bilingual students (EBS) in the English classroom. The specific tech tool featured is Newsela.com. One great feature of this site is that you can change the lexile levels of the articles. I cover a brief overview of how to use it and a couple of the affordances and restraints that it offers. This video highlights my attention for all learners and shows that I am constantly thinking about ways to improve the learning experience for my students.

PERSONAL THEORY OF LEARNING

This is a document that I created that is written in the form of question-and-answer regarding my different views on learning. A few of the topics mentioned are Webb's Depth of Knowledge, metacognitive skills, assessment theory, and Growth Mindset. Each answer is well thought out and backed by research. This theory exemplifies my dedication and thoroughness when it comes to my profession.

ASSESSMENT DESIGN CHECKLIST

This is a checklist that I created to be used whenever I design an assessment. Each component on this checklist is backed by research and includes an in depth rationale for why it is essential. This project highlights my ability to be organized and intentional when it comes to obtaining data regarding my students' growth.

LESSON PLAN: A COURTROOM IN THE CLASSROOM

This is a lesson plan that I developed for a piece of non-fiction text. This lesson is inspired by the four C's for 21st century learning: Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication. Students have to think critically to determine whether a character is guilty or innocent. By collaborating in small groups, students create a slideshow presentation and communicate their findings with the rest of the class. This lesson plan demonstrates my desire to design activities that are engaging and valuable to my students.

INDEPENDENT NOVEL UNIT WEBSITE

This is a website that I designed primarily for a flipped classroom or asynchronous learning. In a flipped classroom the bulk of the reading and various assignments are to be completed at home so that when students arrive in the classroom they can focus on asking questions, working in groups, or completing projects during class time. This website is an example of my creativity and organization when it comes to asynchronous learning.

Research Projects

IMPROVING SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

In this video I explain why student absenteeism is a wicked problem. In an attempt to provide some solutions to this problem, I poled various teachers from different school districts to figure out what works and what doesn't work when it comes to attendance guidelines. I used that data to guide my research and combined my findings to produce three possible techniques to improve student absenteeism. This project showcases my potential for designing personal research projects regarding my immediate practice.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH PAPER

This is a complete research project about the use of meta-cognitive skills to improve an after school homework assistance program. This paper uses scholarly journals to guide my testing methods and includes original research results. Through this I demonstrate my ability to organize a complete, professional research project as well as my discipline for thoroughness.
